Today You Tube celebrates its 8th birthday

The Google-owned video site You Tube today celebrates its 8th birthday. The website, acquired by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion, continues to thrive, boasting more than 100 hours of video uploaded every minute. The website’s team said “When YouTube’s site first launched in May 2005, we never could have imagined the endless ways in which you would inspire, inform and entertain us every day. Today, more than 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.” That number has more than doubled since 2011, when YouTube
celebrated its sixth birthday, and counted only 48 hours of video per minute.
The YouTube team told its users “We’d like to thank you for making YouTube the special place that it is. For showing us how video can create connections, transcend borders and make a difference. For clicking these links even if you aren’t sure what they’ll be.”
The top eight videos on YouTube are increasingly dominated by more professional content as the site focuses on working with major broadcasters. The top comedy video, however, remains ‘Charlie Bit My Finger’, a user-generated film which has now amassed over 525million views. Last year the site was dominated by Korean pop star Psy’s Gangnam Style, which now has 1.6billion views.
YouTube has recently announced that it will charge users for some channels.
